The Left and The Amazing Disappearing Woman
The left had complained and complained during the so-called "sex scandals" (just as it did during the OJ Simpson coverage) that the media's non-stop coverage of individual instances of misogynistic exploitation and abuse (and even murder) was simply a way to distract public attention from the "real issues." Wrong. The media, as we can deduce from leftists own media critiques, dont need "sex scandals" (or sexualized murder trials) to avoid covering "more important issues." Leftists' negation of the underlying importance of the so-called "sex scandals" reflects not only the left's superficial integration of feminism into its politics, but also its protective stance toward men's traditional right to exploitative sexual access to females, and hierarchical sexual relations in general. Why else would leftists have such difficulty seeing misogynistic abuse or exploitation as an important issue alongside the other important issues? Would leftists dare apply a compare and contrast measure of importance to any other human rights issue, regardless of the media's coverage?
